When someone asks you about your goals, do you immediately think about the long term – 10, 20, or even 30 years from now? Or do your thoughts promptly go to what you are trying to accomplish in the short term – this month, or this year? Either approach can be effective. If you are inclined to focus on the long-term, then make it a point to set short-term goals that will help you achieve your longer term objectives. If you have a tendency to focus on the short-term and are unsure of your long-term goals, make sure you are acting in a way that keeps your options open. That way, if you decide you want to go for something big later on, you will be well-positioned to do so. Make sure your short-term and long-term goals are in alignment.

If you’re focused on a long-term goal – perhaps a higher leadership role or an entrepreneurial endeavor – think about the skills, relationships, and reputation you need to be building now to prepare for that role, and then set your short-term goals accordingly.  If you’re unsure of your long-term goal, set short-term goals focused on building your skill set, relationship network, confidence, and credibility. These are the building blocks of career success. If you do this intentionally, you will keep your options open and increase your chances of being prepared for the opportunities that come your way.
